Ballard Locks Sill Beams and Miscellaneous Improvements

Client - Army Corps of Engineers

Location - Seattle, WA

Project Description - This project furnished and installed sill and clapper boards for Gate 1 of the Large Lock of the Ballard Locks system which is the most critical system controlling the water levels in Lake Union and Lake Washington. This work included replacement of Emergency Closure System wire rope, ultrasonic inspections and replacement of the Emergency Closure System carriages, demolition of the Montlake Cut fishing pier and commissioning of the emergency carriage system.

Nisqually’s Role - Challenges on this project included trying to marry new equipment and materials with components that were over 60 years old and had been in a corrosive environment. To mitigate this challenge, Nisqually was required to field modify materials in order to meet the required tolerances. This work was carried out over the waterway by barge required life preservers to be worn by all workers.
